The following conversation was originally posted on the Yahoo Group for Time Banking. Because of the great material, we have reposted it here. The original contributors were Mark Nelson from rural Washington State, Stephanie Rearick from Dance County, and Jen Moore of TimeBanksUSA.

“We're about to really ramp up our promotion efforts at Lewis County
Community Time Bank (www.communitytimebank.com), and part of that
involves being able to explain the benefits of Time Banks to all the
potential stakeholders. To that end, I'd like to create a comprehensive
list of the benefits of TimeBanking that we can all use to explain and
promote the TimeBank movement.

Please add every reason you can think of on why TimeBanks are
wonderful. I've broken it down into a few basic categories--benefits to
members, to the community, to local non-profits, and to local
businesses. Feel free to add other categories if I missed some. When
we get enough responses, we'll put it in a wiki that all of us can use
or modify as needed for our own TimeBanks. Also, after each reason,
please put your name, your TimeBank, and your location--I think it will
help people to see that this is a worldwide movement, and LOTS of people
are participating. THANKS!” --Mark

TimeBanks are wonderful for their members, because...

1. They help members save and stretch their cash
2. They help members get to know each other, including people of different
ages, races, backgrounds, and abilities
3. They give members access to skill-building and ongoing learning
opportunities
4. They value every member's assets equally, enabling and encouraging
everyone to contribute
5. They help members create a social network that's supportive
6. They help members recognize and take pride in the many gifts they
have to offer to the community
7. They help members learn to ask for help when they need it (and they
don't have to feel "bad" about it because they've earned the right to ask)

TimeBanks are wonderful for communities, because...

1. They help members get to know each other, including people of different
ages, races, backgrounds, and abilities
2. They have the potential to bridge communities/neighborhoods that
would traditionally not interact
3. They have a unifying effect
4. By making neighbors accountable to one another, they can help to
reduce crime and truancy, and increase neighborliness and pride in
community

TimeBanks are wonderful for non-profits, because...

1. They connect organizations more firmly with their surrounding communities
2. They make it easier for organizations to increase their accessibility by
providing child care and transportation when needed
3. They provide a way to make "clients" into "contributors"
4. They can stretch the agency's budget and resources by bringing the
skills and resources of community members and clients into the mix

TimeBanks are wonderful for local businesses, because...

1. They make it easier for businesses to obtain services they can't afford
2. They connect businesses more firmly with their surrounding communities
3. They make it easier for businesses to increase their accessibility by
providing child care and transportation when needed
4. They provide businesses with an easy way to let members know about what
they offer
5. A happy neighbor = a happy shopper!
6. Active participation in the community results in customer loyalty
7. People's resources are better used, and they can therefore better
afford to spend their money locally

I don't know much about time banking and just recently came across this terminology. Its seems interesting to me. Can you please explain the difference between usual banking and time banking because apparently it's seems to be people friendly while high markup in loans generated in the usual banking proves as a disaster for many people in the under developed countries...
